Thank you for visiting our Cancer Research page.
This September we're going to be riding at least 500 miles between us to raise for Cancer Research UK.
Both of us have only recently got back on our bikes after many (many!) years of them just cluttering up the garage; it was only the end of February this year when the cobwebs were dusted off a couple of 15 year-old mountain bikes and a bit of oil applied in the appropriate places before setting off on a rather slow and painful 8km ride out amongst the local hills! Things have gotten easier in the intervening months, and Lory even has a new bike (Rob's just got fettled). Even so, achieving the target will still be a challenge, what with the years of inactivity and the various aches and pains that come to us all.
The amount of cycling might not seem like a lot to some of you, especially when it's spread out of 30 days, but between us we hope to cover the distance from Lancashire to Nantes in France, and doing that in daily chunks on our local roads around Lancashire and the Ribble Valley, like we expect to, we'll both be climbing about 5,500m, which is roughly the equivalent of going up Ben Nevis four times (highest mountain in the UK), 115% of Mont Blanc (highest in the Alps), or Mount Saint Elias in North America (the second highest mountain in the US/Canada)!
Whilst it might sound like we've gone mad, we're doing this to raise money for life-saving research and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. We know that there will be a lot of people doing similar things, raising money for various charities and worth-while causes, etc. We also know the last 18 months or so have seen challenging times for everyone, but we'd really appreciate any support you can give us. Every penny makes a huge difference to vital cancer research so please show your support with a donation to our page. If you can't any moral support will also be welcomed.
