I’m taking part in Race for Life to raise awareness of paraneoplastic syndrome.
In memory of
Alex Belton
17th Aug 1955 - 2nd Mar 2018
On 2nd March 2018 our life changed forever when our Dad unexpectedly passed away with what we now know was lung cancer. Unfortunately for us we didn’t know he had cancer until he was gone. Unknowingly, his body had been trying to fight this disease and it couldn’t fight anymore, antibodies were released in his body that affected his brain. Introducing the words ‘Paraneoplastic syndrome’, a rare disorder found in only 10% of patients with lung cancer, the doctor told us it’s something you hear about at medical school but never see. In his 20+ years as a doctor, he had never experienced it... until our Dad couldn’t fight anymore. We’re doing race for life this year to raise awareness of this horrible disease and hopefully the next person who walks into the hospital with paraneoplastic syndrome caused by cancer will have a different outcome than what we faced.
