Despite the statistics on how many people are affected by cancer, you never really believe it would happen to someone you love. Cancer is often described in terms of a battle. ‘She won the fight.’ ‘He battled hard.’ But when you see it in action, breaking down a person you love, knowing their diagnosis means there’s no hope of survival, it’s not a battle. Because how can you fight when you’re struggling to breath? Or to stand? When you’re no longer able to speak to your daughters when they come to visit you? When you can’t open your eyes to see your wife? From the time my dad was diagnosed with cancer to when he died was just over a month. It was terminal. There was nothing they could do. My dad had a rare form of cancer called Nasopharyngeal cancer. It affects only a small number of people in the UK each year. It was caught too late. So I’m running for my dad, and for other people’s dads. In the hope that the more money and awareness we raise, the less likely it is other people will have to watch someone they love suffer and to learn how to live without them.
