My Story

A challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK, for motorcyclists on cheap and inappropriate motorcycles to ride from Land’s End to John O'Groats in 24hrs on the longest day of the year. Bikes must have been bought for no more than £600. Oh and you cannot use motorways. Let that sink in.....that's further than riding from London to Barcelona. This is my 2nd time but this time its for my dad who died in January 2024. He had a diagnosis of asbestosis and then throat cancer came along (which also claimed his dad). The tumour got large and pushed on his vocal chords reducing his voice to a squeak and at times holding his windpipe open resulting in frequent choking. Radiotherapy reduced the tumour for a while but then it came back and got bigger resulting in him having to be fed through a tube in his stomach. He then started to struggle to breathe and entered hospital in November 2023. They performed an emergency tracheotomy in the belief that he would tolerate the tube that allows a degree of speech. No dice. I never heard my dad's voice from that day forward. That wrecked me. He had 3 torturous months in hospital trying to communicate to us, to staff and struggling terribly. Cancer is a truly horrible disease which has unfortunately touched most of us. It can be beaten and I long for a future where we don't hear of examples like mine.
