Kyla's Race for Life

In March this year, our team captain Donna was on holiday with her family when she noticed a swelling on her 3 year old daughter Ruby's stomach. Wanting to rule out anything untoward, she took Ruby to the hospital only to be told that a scan had picked up a tumour on her kidney. Ruby would need to be flown back to Scotland immediately by air ambulance and Donna would have to travel with her alone, leaving behind her husband Simon and their 1 year old son Charlie. An ambulance was waiting for them at Glasgow airport to take them straight to the Glasgow Children's Hospital where Ruby underwent numerous blood tests, urine tests, CT scans, MRI scans, the works, before the medical team could confirm Donna and Simon's worst fear - their 3 year old daughter Ruby had cancer. A Wilm's tumour to be exact. Ruby would have to undergo 6 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by an operation to remove the tumour and her kidney, followed by a further 27 weeks of chemo. This little star has been poked and prodded more times than is even imaginable, she's had weekly chemotherapy sessions, she's been sick, she's lost her hair, you name it! Yet still she smiles, every single day. Ruby, now 4, has had her whole life turned upside down and has handled it with nothing but grace and positivity, even joking about her "cheeky kidney". She also rocks her new hairdo! This little star is an inspiration to us all ? as are her parents and her little bro. In honour of Ruby, we've decided to put ourselves through Pretty Muddy - although it's nothing compared to what Ruby has endured.
