My Story
We are supporting Peter with his event to bring the whole community together. Money raised on this page will go towards his overall total, read his story here: Hi, I’m Peter Ralph and I live in the centre of Kingsbridge. On the day following our return from holiday in September 2020 my wife Margaret discovered that she had Grade 2 Breast Cancer and subsequently spent 9 months in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Following further cosmetic surgery last in November she has had a clear result for her latest mammogram. Unfortunately, exactly a year later, I discovered in September 20212 that I had Stage 4 terminal cancer in the bile tubes of the gall bladder/liver as well as in the lymph nodes. We are both determined to weather this latest storm in the best way that we can and are organising two related events in aid of awareness and sponsorship for Cancer Research UK. Having been Co-organiser of the Salcombe Rotary Crabfest for the first 4 years that it ran prior to Covid, I am experienced at running community events. I have now decided to organise The Kingsbridge 21K Walk for Cancer Research on Sunday 6th March, just before my final Chemotherapy 3-week cycle. This will be 15.5 circuits along The Promenade in Kingsbridge from the Town Square to The Crabshell Inn, running from 8.30 am to around 1.30 pm when pizzas nibbles will be available. We have a number of entrants who will walk this Half Marathon (21 Kilometres) with me, on a sponsored basis and it would be fantastic if you decided to join us as a Team Member. Alternatively your donation will help to further the cause of Cancer Research so that you, and later generations, may be able to gradually enjoy freedom from this killer disease that will affect on in 2 of you in your lifetime If 21 km is too far for you to walk in a day then you can either decide to split it between two days or to take part in the Kingsbridge Walk All Over Cancer for the whole of March 2022. Many Kingsbridge and District residents will be turning out to on a daily basis for this initiative which is aimed at raising public awareness to the desperate need for donations to Cancer Research UK. It will also enable you to have a regular routine that will keep you physically and mentally fit, not only for March but also for life. Individuals and groups will be completing 10,000 steps a day, either on their own or, more likely, by sharing the steps with 2 or 3 friends throughout March 1st – 31st. 3 of you would involve each person walking just 1.33 miles a day each; most of you probably achieve more than this in a normal day. Walkers will be provided with access to our fundraising page and will get a tee shirt and details to support their fundraising of donations from friends, family and colleagues. We aim to raise a further £5,000 from this activity and it will all be amalgamated into the Kingsbridge Cancer Research UK Superfund. I will be seeking sponsorship to help provide things such as bad weather clothing, refreshments and photographic records as well as organising flyers and various other publicity and marketing to make the most of your participation in this fun, exciting and very worthwhile community event. We are aiming to get radio, television and other media coverage to really put Kingsbridge and you, it’s residents in the spotlight to maximise the results of all participants and donors. Let’s make this one of the best events of 2022 and show what a wonderful caring community we are!
