Team David is taking part in the Shine Walk Your Way to help beat cancer

In memory of

David Blake

My Story

[DO READ THE UPDATES AT THE END OF THE PAGE FOR TEAM DETAILS] Team David are family and friends taking part in the 'Shine Walk Your Way' to honour David's life. Colin and I are walking to celebrate our beloved son David. Amie is walking to celebrate the life of her ‘broski’. Sam, Clare, Laura, Sarah and others are walking to celebrate the life of their good friend. Last year the 'Shine Night Walk' in York was rescheduled due to flooding, meaning I was mid-way across the Atlantic and couldn't join Amie and Sam in the walk. This year the 'Shine Night Walk' in Cardiff was cancelled due to the pandemic. But the alternative pandemic walk 'Shine Walk Your Way' means that more of us can walk together than would have otherwise been possible. While we will all be in different places, we'll be together celebrating David. Some of us will walk (or run!) 10k in one go - others will spend several days doing it. Some of us will start on Thursday 8th October, but we'll all finish by Saturday 17th October, the date originally set for the walk in Cardiff. David loved his life! And his friends and family around the world loved him! But David had the condition neurofibromatosis type 1, and just over 2 years ago he died from a rare cancer as a result of that condition. He had just celebrated his 30th birthday. We're doing 30 events to celebrate the 30 years that we were blessed to have David with us. And this walk is one of those 30@30 events. In the words of one of his special friends David was ‘a computer genius, a fan of obscure anime, an avid reader and surgically attached to his trademark leather jacket’ (see photo in gallery!!). To make sure people are still getting the support they need even during the pandemic, Team David is taking part in 'Shine Walk Your Way'. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking work, so please sponsor us now! UPDATE ON TEAM: Jackie and Colin Cavanagh will walk (with Bessie) for 1km for 10 days in South Gloucestershire [AMAZINGLY 10K in ONE day!!!!] Maureen and Keith (David's gramps) Jones will walk at least ten 1km circuits of the roads encompassing Hatherley Park, Cheltenham between 8th and 17th October.[DONE TWICE!! Once in parts, and on the last day 10k ALL IN ONE GO! AMAZING!!] Jenny Devereux is a seasoned walker and will be undertaking the whole 10k somewhere near Weston-super-Mare all in one go sometime during the walk period.[THREE CHEERS for Jenny who has completed her walk!] Amy Beaumont and Tom Dawson will do the walk all-in-one-go in the beautiful Beaumont Park near the University of Huddersfield where they are studying, sometime between 8th and 17th October. [HURRAY! AMY AND TOM HAVE JUST FINISHED] Clare Trigg is going to RUN the whole 10k in one go in her village of Yatton, on either Saturday 11th or Saturday 17th October depending upon work (if she has to run on 11th she'll do a slightly shorter run so that she can finish with the majority of us in 17th. [COMPLETED IN ONE - AS A RUN!!!!] Geraldine Keveren (and Salty the dog !) will be walking on the beach near her home in Rosemarkie Scotland - and will even be walking to the nearby lighthouse! [SALTY COMPLETED - and took GERALDINE FOR GOOD MEASURE} Sam Balmforth is going to do the walk at Yeadon Tarn. He says that the circuit is around 1.2km so he'll walk around it about 9 times, possibly over several days if necessary. Three cheers for Sam who did the original walk in York with Amie last year. [THREE CHEERS! SAM HAS COMPLETED HIS WALK] Sarah Burrow and Gavin Berry are going to do the walk in Cardiff and are busy practising. [Route changed due to rstrictions but they will be finished before total Welsh lockdown! - THREE CHEERS THEY FINISHED!] Greg and Jayne Webster will be walking round Axbridge Reservoir (from what Jayne says Greg will walk and she'll be in her wheelchair, Boo - that still counts!) accompanied by Jess (woof!) Emma Thompson is walking on 8th October from Birmingham Centre to Kings Heath along the canal (on 7th to avoid bad weather).[WELL DONE EMMA - the first team member to complete!] Laura (and her Dad) are walking the whole 10 k in one go in South Wales. [YAY! they've completed it] Amie is doing a night time walk (so it really is a Shine Night Walk) round York [YAY! SHE's DONE IT]
