Shine London 2018 - Half Marathon

Sat 22 Sep 2018 - Sat 22 Sep 2018

I'm walking at Shine Night Walk to raise as much as I can to help fund the fight against cancer

In memory of

Gordon and his brother Mervyn.

My Story

Thank you for showing your support by visiting our page! As my Team Leader (and awesome brother) Cris says, we started our mission to fund raise for Cancer Research in the effort to see some good come from the loss to cancer of my wonderful, and hugely missed husband, Gordon. Gordon was kind and funny and smart. Remarkably good humoured, he could put a positive spin on anything! Even looking for ways to use the experience of being in hospital to write a book to help others in his situation! He would love that we are 'putting our best foot forward' and trying to make a difference. In fact he'd have been the first to back us. In the past few weeks Gordon's brother Mervyn has also lost his life to cancer. Another warm hearted and lovely man, who will be remembered for seeing the funny side of life. I have therefore kicked off my fundraising page with a donation to honour the two brothers who have inspired me to do some things I've never done before - all in a good cause! When we first talked about my need to 'do something', Cris challenged me to fundraise. In classic sibling fashion I accepted the challenge on condition he do the same! Ian, Tom and Francesca have signed up to support us and referee! We have lots of things planned and we will keep you posted on our progress... Our first fundraising effort was a carboot sale where we were amazed by the number of people who stopped to tell us their stories. Some of loss and others of overcoming their illness. So much heartache and so much bravery. And all believing that every little we raise is worth it for the hope of saving someone else. Thank you to everyone who bought something just because they wanted to help. An even bigger thank you to those who put something in the collection box because they did too. You made our first effort memorable and increased our determination! I should also say a quick 'hello' to all those who spotted us wearing our Shine Walk T-shirts and came to tell us they will be walking too. I can't say we will see you in the crowd, but we will be cheering you on! And best wishes to Shirley. We wish you well with your recovery. At this point I should like to mention those who have asked us to wear a ribbon to remember their loved ones as we walk. We are honoured to remember not only Gordon and Mervyn but Mark, Ray and Sheena who are all sadly missed. Thank you to their families for supporting our fundraising. Your generosity is amazing. We send you all our best wishes. Each year Cancer Research UK’s scientists get closer to beating cancer. Every new development brings hope to those desperate for a cure. But research is expensive. CRUK need our support to turn research into breakthroughs that save lives. Lives that could be those of our loved ones. So I am asking for your support. Please sponsor either me or one of the team and help make a difference! My Dad used to say that the best gift was one it hurt a little to give. The sacrifice gives meaning. So maybe go without your coffee or takeaway or whatever this week and donate the money you saved. Then tell us what you did. And enjoy feeling good that you made the effort. We are so thankful for your support and your contributions will enliven our page! In the words of Helen Keller 'Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.' Thank you for helping us to make a difference Kate, Cris, Ian, Francesca and Tom
