Karen's Race for Life

I was extremely lucky in October 2018 when I was invited for a routine mammogram having had a special birthday just a few months earlier. I was recalled and had further tests done which resulted in me being told I had Breast Cancer. It was incredible the speed in which I was dealt with by the NHS - 15 days later I had surgery to remove the cancer and this was a success. What followed for me was a period of recuperation from the surgery followed by 3 weeks of radiotherapy. I visited the Cancer Unit in the City Hospital every day and I am so grateful to my husband, my family and my friends for taking the time out of their busy lives to support me with this part of my journey. The staff within this unit are amazing and they treat everyone with such compassion it really does make it easier for patients to deal with this part of their journey. Cancer has no boundaries and this is visible when you sit in the waiting area prior to your treatment. There are people of all ages doing the same thing - trying to beat cancer. I've been one of the very lucky people who can say that I've done that - I have beaten cancer and now I want to do this very small thing in the hope that one day there will be a cure for this most horrendous disease. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
