My Story
My mum was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2016 and has surpassed her initial prognosis thanks to the targeted therapy that wouldn’t have been available without funding and research. Despite the fact the cancer is in her lungs, spine and brain she continues to show amazing strength, walking for up to an hour most days and even managing to entertain her energetic grandchildren! Her strength is an absolute inspiration to our family and we are fortunate that her targeted therapy is giving her a reasonable quality of life while battling this disease. She is truly standing up to cancer so I would like to join her in the fight by cycling 500 kms in one month and help raise money for Cancer Research UK’s Stand Up to Cancer campaign. It won’t be easy with a demanding 2 year old and 5 month old to look after but this pales in comparison to the challenges mum takes in her stride every day. She has had 3 litres of fluid drained from her lungs twice, a chest drain attached and detached, not to mention the various side effects she has on a daily basis as a result of her treatment. The challenge started on 15 October and it will end with big celebrations on mum’s birthday 15 November. I hope I do her proud! The money raised will help take breakthroughs in the lab and transform them into treatments and cures for cancer patients like my mum who need them right now. Dig deep and donate to show cancer it’s payback time.
