My mum: Barbara Philomena
16th Oct 1947 - 25th Dec 2014
Three years ago, we lost my Mum, Barbara Philomena, to lung cancer. Mum was 67. Originally born in Recess, in County Galway, Ireland, she moved over here as a teenager, and trained as a nurse - a career she stayed in until she retired. She had been enjoying an early retirement with Dad, buying a new house and spending plenty of time with her much loved six grandchildren. Coming from a large Irish family, Mum was very family-orientated, and loved nothing more than the family coming together and spending time with them. Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in November 2014, only 3 weeks after we lost Dad to lung disease, and me and my sister spent 5 precious weeks caring for her and spending time with her, until she passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, 2014. She is sorely missed, and has left a space that will never be quite filled. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life Pretty Muddy to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
