I survived cancer. My dad did not.
In memory of
My dad
When I was a teenager in the 1980s my mum was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Little was known about it, and treatment was determined by using what was known from research on similar cancers. Research made a difference. My dad was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2011. He was treated palliatively. Towards the end of his life a new medication was made available to those with terminal prostate cancer. He responded to this medication, and it gave my mum and dad some extra time to put things in order. Research made a difference. I was diagnosed with cancer in July 2015. I had surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone treatment. When the docters were discussing all the different treatment options, they often mentioned the research that helped them choose the best treatment for me. Research made a difference. I developed lymphoedma, and post-treatment fatigue that made returning to full-time work difficult. Research has shown that one of the best ways of managing fatigue and lymphoedma is with exercise. I started gentle swimming, and as my exercise tolerance increased added some regular walking. My fatigue improved and I was eventually able to return to full-time work. Research made a difference. I have set myself the challenge of completing the Shine Night Walk London half marathon in September 2017 to raise money so that... Research can continue to make a difference.
