My Story

Everyone has a cancer story. Whether they've been directly affected or know someone else who has, it's become such a common disease hurting too many families. This is my story. In January 2018, my mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer after attending just a regular early screening, at the age of 55. However, our family is one of the lucky ones. Fortunately, thanks to the amazing Frimley Park Hospital Cancer Team, my mum underwent rectal surgery, removing around 3 inches of her bowel and several surrounding lymph nodes. The operation was carried out within 1 month from diagnosis, followed by a second operation about 6 months later to remove the stoma that she temporarily had in place (A stoma is a an opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either your digestive or urinary system to allow waste to be diverted out of your body). I can't even begin to put into words the emotions that were felt within our family. The only thing that's worse than seeing the one you love ill and fighting to recover, is seeing the heartache of the ones around you also experiencing the same pain you feel inside. It's unfortunate situations like these that pull an already tight knit family even closer together, and I am so thankful everyday for their upmost love and support and for the special bond we hold. Throughout the whole process my mum remained positive and strong, even though we knew just like us, she was absolutely terrified for her future. She is truly one of the most incredible people, an absolute inspiration, my role model! And that's my cancer story. If running this race and raising money helps get us even an hour closer to finding the cure, then running this 5k alongside my best friend Jess is definitely worth it. I'm reaching out to everyone I know to ask for their support with helping me achieve my fundraising goal; please help me fight the good fight!!! #prettyinpink Big love, Jenny xx Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life Pretty Muddy to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor me now.
