So, doing this, but with a twist. March has 5-weeks. Marathon row each week each done in "one go".

In memory of

Mum, Granny & Grandad, and everyone else who's suffered or been affected

My Story

Some of you may know I used to do a fair bit of indoor rowing in my younger days! Some might know I dislocated my right knee 11yrs ago, so struggle with running distances. Fewer still will know that I re-started gym work on 27th December, and did a Marathon Row the day before I turned 50 on 09th February, just 6-weeks later! A friend is doing a sponsored swim during February for Diabetes UK, and suggested I might do the "Marathon Row across the month of March" for Cancer Research, but I figured I can already do that, in a single sitting, so none of you would sponsor me for something that wasn't a challenge. And yes, you seasoned runners, I KNOW it's not quite the same, but could you seriously do it? Would you even want to??! So had the slightly daft idea of doing 5 Marathon Rows across the five weeks of March. FIVE MARATHONS??! A Marathon Row takes between 3.5 & 4hrs and is 42,195m, so I'll be doing 210,975m in March - that's got to be worth a few quid, surely?? Why? Well, I'm 50, nowhere near as fit as I used to be, a bit overweight, life's just too short not to, it's nice to think of doing something for others, or being able to benefit people I've never met and don't know, and my significantly younger cousin is doing a half-marathon run, so I can't let him get away with that! Besides, I like the idea of someone being proud of me for attempting, and hopefully completing something as absurd as this - I know Mum would be. Grandparents on Mum's side both died of cancer. Mum's brother died of cancer. Mum died of cancer 8yrs ago (27Mar). Elderly relative died of cancer tail end of last year. Employee, and an ex-employee, both whom I've know for most of my life, both died just before Christmas of cancers. The wife of a good athletics (official) colleague died a few weeks ago of a cancer. Cousin currently has, and is doing a damn fine sterling job, of fighting a cancerous oesophageal tumour (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1918529768464496/). People you know, will get and die from cancer. People close to you, perhaps your parents, your friends & neighbours, sadly, even your children - it's not discriminatory - it doesn't care who you are or where you're from, what colour skin you have, which football team you support or which way you voted - it's just hungry, vicious, greedy and persistent. We need to find improvements to treatment, and for that, we need money to be invested, which is why I'm doing this. I also happen to run a little program on our work computers, in the background and only when they're not "busy", and would encourage everyone to do that - we've done it for about 15-yrs now, never had a problem, and feel we've contributed to the cause - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ Please give generously, and give what you can. Hope to make people proud, and will update this page through the month of March.
