My Story

Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. We all know someone who has had cancer/know of someone suffering at this exact moment in time. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. It's a scary thought, and one which I don't want our kids and newer generations to have to struggle with. In my case, I was exposed to cancer, and the devastating effects it can have on a family from a very young age. At the time I hadn't quite grasped what it was and why it was happening. My elder cousin was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1995, at the age of 4, and sadly left us on November 3rd 1998, aged 7. She was the most beautiful girl. Full of life, happiness, strength and always smiling. Right until the end, her smile was bright and gave everyone around her positive energy. Even when the treatment started, and she lost all of her hair, there wasn't a day where I saw her down, or complaining about why it had happened. She carried on as normal, living life to the fullest. Never shying away from the illness she had, but not letting it rule her life either. Her character was one to admire. We should strive to have her beautiful outlook on life. This race for life is for her. I then heard of many people suffering with cancer, it became the norm as I grew up. Every other person had someone battling cancer, had suffered a loss/was going through a rough time trying to pull through. My family once again dealt with loss to cancer in 2015. Another strong, courageous, loving, important part of our family left us. Someone who guided us all in one way or another. Gave us advice about how to deal with life, any particular situations we found ourselves in and just generally gave us irreplaceable life lessons. Babaji was, and always will be, a core pillar of our family. This race for life is for him. We have seen further battles with cancer over the last few years, which with the blessings of God, and great medical treatment, have resulted in successful annihilation of cancer - which is what it deserves. We hope that cancer continues to be beaten down. This race for life is for our survivors.
