My Story
My Story Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I’m fundraising for Cancer Research UK. At the age of 22 and the eldest of 4 children I got a phone call from my dad to come home from university. I drove home and knew instantly something wasn't right. My dad and mum sat us all down and explained why dad had been so ill. It was the dreaded C word... CANCER! My heart sank! My dad underwent treatment for months but the tumour in his stomach was too big and spread. After months of watching my dad shrink from 27stone to 6stone, losing his hair, appetite we knew we weren't going to be able to beat this. So he came home! We lost our Dad, John, June 1st 2009. My dad was a loving husband, son, brother and father to four children. We as a family coped and got to say goodbye to him at home in his own bed surrounded by his family. My dad was a big guy both physically (before cancer) and in personality. Everyone loved him, he made everyone laugh and although a big guy he was our gentle giant. He would often joke no one would ever attend his funeral; I hope he was looking down as on that day it was filled to the rafters and outside. It was a hard year straight after for me. I became quiet, wouldn't go home as often or speak that much about it. I was very close to my dad "daddy's girl" his 6LB 1 Oz. After coming to terms with his death and seeking counselling I still have my bad days but they are far outweighed by the lovely memories I have of him. I have decided after many years of fundraising this year I would do the race for life in his memory. I want to help prevent cancer and help other families not go through what my dad and us as a family went through. All donations will be going to cancer research UK. Race is June 26th 5K Wirral. Much love Laura x
