My Story
WE are a mixed group of male & female bowls players who are baring all to create an unconventional themed calendar, (with strategic props) to challenge the stereotypes that lawn bowlers are plagued with, while raising money for two amazing charities, Cancer Research UK and Bloodwise. Sport brings people together from all walks of life and the bonds forged on the field of play are unlike any other - you win together, lose together and find out about who you really are. With such an extended family with a mix of ages, it's inevitable that we have to deal with illness and sadness along the way. Yet when something happens to one of your own who's in their twenties, which should be a time of possibilities, of career milestones, relationships and adventures, it rocks a community. In 2011 international player and life and soul of the party Carole McLean died just one day after being diagnosed with cancer. Bowlers felt they wanted to do something so we set a physical challenge to walk one km for every year of her life, to raise money in her memory. Earlier this year another colleague, Hannah Overton, 29, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leaukemia, a blood cancer, following a trip to a walk in clinic with a swollen neck. She hasn't left hospital since, and is currently at the Leicester Royal Infimary undergoing a drugs trial. She's just finishing one of four rounds of chemotherapy, which consisted of three different types of chemo. The treatment is intensive and gruelling and she can't leave the hospital because she has no immune system. We want to raise money and awareness while having a bit of fun within the bowling community. When we told Hannah of our plans she was overwhelmed and said she'd "been cheered up no end". Please help us to make this courageous, beautiful woman smile by helping us smash our target!
