My Story

Thank you for visiting my Cancer Research UK Cycle 300 page. A huge thank you to everyone who is able to donate. It feels lonely otherwise. All donations are welcome, no matter what. Every penny will make a difference to a life somewhere... I'm lucky enough to be able to chat to my mother on the phone today, to see her smile, which lights up a room, and to discuss books, which we share a passion for. My mother's life was saved by dedicated doctors and nurses. She has given me permission to share a little of her story here. In the late 90s mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 49. You had to be 50 to get checked up then so the cancer was found by chance. Mum had chemo, and then her lymph nodes removed. This is very uncomfortable, as you 'perspire' in hot weather; basically you ring with sweat, but we were raised to speak genteel like women. Still, sometimes it is important to be graphic. Later my mum found another lump and, this time, she bravely underwent a mastectomy; she showed me her breast afterwards and it looked nice and normal. Again, I'm being honest and graphic too. This September, before the end of the month, I will complete 300 miles on my bike for Cancer Research UK. I will be pedaling harder than ever because I want to raise money for life-saving research and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. For me 300 miles in a month is tough, but I will do it. Every penny makes a huge difference to vital cancer research so please show your support with a donation to my page even if it is just £1.00. This is my second year doing the cycle. In the past I've done crocus walks with my children, and worked as manger for Tenovus, a Welsh Cancer charity. Thank you for reading my story. Hermione. X
