Henry's Ride for Grandad

Sun 22 Aug 2021

My Story

In June 2021, Ken Attwell (Henry's Grandad) was diagnosed unexpectedly with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). Almost immediately, and entirely from of own initiative, Henry (9 years old) declared that he wanted to do a ride to raise money to help his Grandad. Between them they decided that they wanted the money to go to Cancer Research UK, and Henry very specifically wanted to select the option to focus the money on Leukaemia. In Henry’s own words: “My Grandad is a fun person that always makes me laugh. He’s always up for trying new things with me. From the second I heard Grandad was unwell I immediately had the idea of doing a charity bike ride to help people that have the same disease as him, because I know how bad they would feel and their families. I thought it might even get them some better medicine to help their chances of recovery. I hope it works as well as I planned. It would mean the world to me.” Fast forward 7 weeks and yesterday Ken came out of hospital for the first time since the initial diagnosis. Unfortunately, despite receiving superb care, treatment options have run out and now the focus is on enjoying the remaining quality time with family members to the fullest possible extent. Now more than ever, Henry remains determined to do what little he can to help fight this awful disease and improve the chances for anyone else receiving this diagnosis. So, the ride! Henry truly want's to push himself as far as he can to really earn your support, so, having previously made it to the end of a 15 mile ride, he is going to nearly double this, doing a 'quarter century' ride of 25 miles, starting and ending at his Grandad's home in Somerset. It's fair to say he is feeling a little daunted, but definitely committed to make it to the end in support of Cancer Research UK's work!

CAUSE

Leukaemia

Five-year survival rates for leukaemia have more than tripled in the last 40 years. But despite this progress, around 4,600 people still lose their lives to the disease every year. Almost a third of all cancers diagnosed in children are leukaemia. Your donation can help Cancer Research UK find better treatments and new ways to prevent the disease in adults and children.
