I'm cycling 200 x 2 miles this September for Cancer Research UK
Thanks for making it here - most of you already know my story but for those who don’t... Septembers aren’t really my month - in September 2012 my world was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and given weeks to live, I was 27. I underwent aggressive chemo, an operation to remove most of my stomach and oesophagus and more chemo on the other side. The treatment seemed to go well and subsequent scans showed that against all odds I was cancer free! I spent the next few years living the life I nearly lost and even welcomed my miracle son into the world in 2018. Fast forward to September 2019 and unfortunately a routine scan showed that the cancer had come back, seven years after initial diagnosis, and has spread to some lymph nodes. In April of this year I finished a gruelling regime of more chemo and some radiation to try and halt the progression at least for a while. I’m still waiting to find out the outcome of that. Cancer Research helped to refine the treatment I received in 2012/2013 and the protocol I’ve been on this year too and I’m going to be leaning on them heavily in the future as I’m now completely off ‘routine’ treatment routes as my type of recurrence hasn’t happened before. Anyway - all that in a very long winded way of saying that I want to make September a good month again and so I’m going to be completing the 200 mile cycle challenge for Cancer Research. However, because I can never follow a recipe to the letter and because I’ve been diagnosed twice in September, I’m going to double up and do it twice and try and hit 400 miles for the month instead! I’m not long out of a very brutal and aggressive treatment that took more out of me than even I prepared for so this is going to be a massive challenge for me. In addition to working full time and running after a very energetic toddler I think it’s safe to say that this September is definitely going to be interesting! I'll be posting my journey on my instagram page @gutless_fighter if you want to follow along.
