My Story
I haven't met a single person whose life has not been touch by cancer. The current statistic is that 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. As a scientist I know the significance of the challenges ahead and the need for new research into cutting edge technologies that will advance our understanding of cancer. Over 10 years ago Cancer Research UK gave me my start as an academic, funding my work on the complement immune system and how it could be harnessed to fight cancer. I built a team of courageous and creative scientists who would investigate how complement punches holes in cells and how some cancer cells evade complement by cloaking themselves in proteins that stop this from happening. Every year my lab takes part in the CRUK Pretty Muddy as a way of giving back. At age 44, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This year marks 1 and a half years that I am cancer-free and to celebrate my team is taking part in the Pretty Muddy. Please sponsor us to raise awareness for breast cancer and to support research into life saving research funded by Cancer Research UK.
