My Story

In 2015, I lost my best friend. I'm sure everyone who knows me will know how much of an impact this has had on my life. My Dad was diagnosed in 2014 after fighting a different type of cancer; a brain tumour he fought in secret. In 2014 I was sat in Macmillan to hear the news that the C word had entered our life again, far too close to home. The day my Dad was diagnosed with Lymphoma was the same day a few hours later I received my University results. Through tears of happiness my Dad said to me "it doesn't matter what happens to me now because i got to be here for this". He was the proudest father and put everyone above himself. Even on the day he received the worst news possible. My Dad was my hero. He was the funniest, most loving and caring person anyone was lucky enough to meet. And i was lucky enough for this gentle human to be my Dad. He fought cancer for a year with a smile on his face. He was extremely brave and tried to make the most of his situation and always so positive, he was so empowering. Early 2015, we had the incredible news that he was in the the all clear and it had gone and we couldn't of been more proud. Our hero had fought it again in the most respectable way. Unfortunately, late 2015 Dad got poorly with what we thought was the flu. He ended up in intensive care and we was told he had a few hours to live as his cancer was back with a vengeance. This was the worst moment of our lives and extremely unexpected. However, once again Dad surprised everyone and fought the odds and survived those few hours we were told he had left. He made it from intensive car back to Macmillan and after nights/weeks of laying on the floor by his side, he was conscious again and I was able to speak to my hero. We stayed in hospital for 9 more weeks. I was so grateful i could have him back for that short amount of time. And yet in this time, all he worried about was us and making sure we were ok. It took him in the end, but he fought so long and hard. He didn't deserve that life any longer and now I hope he's in a better place. He is with us every day and will forever be my hero and best friend. His memory and light he brought into other lives are with our family and I'm so grateful for the 23 years I had with this incredible man. This is my story. And people have to deal with this every single day. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lives and so many people are affected. I'd really appreciate it for any donations made. But I thank you for reading my story even if you can't. I speak about my Dad every single day and that's something I'll never feel ashamed for. Any platform that I'm able to speak about his memory means a lot to me, so thank you for taking the time to read this. And thank you in advance for any donations made. Leah x

CAUSE

Lymphoma

Survival rates for many types of lymphoma has increased significantly – now, twice as many people survive non-Hodgkin lymphoma as in the 1970s. And four out of five people will survive Hodgkin's lymphoma, compared to fewer than half of patients in the 1970s. Help Cancer Research UK improve effective treatments and survival with your donation.
