May Reeves & Maureen Kelly

My Story

Debi’s Story. Earlier last year on 23rd May 2016, my life was changed forever, when my Mom, Maureen Kelly lost her battle with lung cancer. Leaving behind a devastated family, Phil her husband of 53 years and three children, Phil, Debi and Alan, four grandchildren; Kate, Dan, Isabel and young Jack, and also a great grandchild, George. Gordon's story. On 15th June 1986 our lives was tragically affected by the loss of Gordon's Mom, May Reeves when she lost her battle with bowel cancer. Leaving behind a husband, Keith Reeves and a very young family, Frances Usher and Gordon. Later she was to have 3 granddaughters, Tania, Stacey and Emma to which she would never meet. Our Moms were women like no other, they gave us life, nurtured us, taught us, dressed us, fought for us, held us, shouted at us, kissed us, but most importantly loved us unconditionally. There are not enough words I can say to describe just how important our moms were Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Their vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Right now, half of those people will survive. Their ambition is to accelerate their progress and see three-quarters of people surviving the disease by 2034. Their scientists, doctors and nurses are working to save more lives and create more tomorrows for people in the UK and across the world. Every day, they’re making progress towards preventing more cancers, diagnosing the disease earlier, and developing new treatments. Thanks to you, we’ve helped double cancer survival in the last 40 years. But there’s still so much to be done. While survival for some cancers has improved dramatically, others, like lung, pancreatic and oesophageal cancers and brain tumours, are still very hard to treat. Cancer Research UK need to change that – and they have already increased the amount they are spending on these cancers as part of our strategy. They are also working to diagnose more cancers earlier, and to find better ways to tackle rare cancers and those affecting children and young adults. None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers and generous supporters.
