My Story

In March last year I had my three year check up at specsavers. (I’ve always had a perfect eye sight so i thought I’ll be fine to not bother to have regular eye tests.) I went for my eye test as normal when they found that my optic disc is swollen in my left eye. I had many of tests at specsavers so they could confirm it was my optic discs. I was given an emergency appointment at the eye hospital at the JR within two weeks, but didn’t actually get an appointment for another 6 months..... when the time came around for my ‘emergency’ appointment at the JR in November. I had tests done again where they found that my optic disc were swollen but they also found a lump at the back of my left eye. They called it a tumour. I then was told I needed to go to the eye specialised at Liverpool hospital the following week for the Professor to look at my eye and to have a biopsy. Getting to Liverpool for the following week and having my first operation and for it to be a biopsy was scary.... The biopsy came back a week after and shown it was eye cancer called eye melanoma. I never thought you could get eye cancer and I never thought I myself would get cancer. You never think you would be diagnosed with such a horrible disease. Eye cancer is such a rare form of cancer. But it can spread to your liver, where I found out after my treatment that I’m on high risk that it could. I’m under going radiotherapy and screening for the rest of my life. So if you haven’t had an eye test in while, please just go and have them checked. Talking out loud about the C word makes it a little bit better. Cancer sucks but it does not define you!!❤️ Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life Pretty Muddy to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work. Cancer has affect many people in each and everyone of our families. It is so close to my heart. I would like to do something in return for what they have done for me. Every pound or penny counts. Thank you!
