My Story
Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page. 2022 was the year that we lost my best friend Pat and also my wife’s much loved aunt Sylvia both to cancer. Pat had prostate cancer which he had fought for 12 years and Sylvia was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. Both these incredible people met the disease head on, with great good humour and tremendous spirit. They are both so very sadly missed. In an effort to honour their memory myself and Chris ( Pats son) have decided to attempt the Yorkshire three peaks challenge in order to raise some money to help fund research into Cancer. We will be joined in our efforts by a team made up of family and friends including my step son Simon and his wife Beth, and by my wife Wendy who will providing support on the day of the walk by driving our support vehicle and ensuring we are all hydrated and fed. We will also be joined in our effort by our two furry friends, Border Collies Jack ( Chris’s dog) and Sweep who is my beautiful boy. I’m sure they’ll cope much better than we will. The walk itself is 24.5 miles long and takes in the three major Yorkshire peaks of Pen-y -Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Although I have climbed all three separately I have never made an attempt on all three in the same day. The walk will also be something of a celebration for me personally as in August 2020 I broke the neck of my femur in a cycling accident and was told my injury was life changing. Little by little however I have regained some fitness and can’t wait to get back to my favourite pastime of walking in the wonderful hills and scenery of the North, something I thought for a while I would never do again. The fact that I can even contemplate this challenge is a tribute to the skill of my surgeon and the care I received from the NHS. I am truly grateful. I can’t think of a better way to honour Pat and Sylvia than by putting my repaired hip to good use by raising some funds for Cancer Research UK by doing a walking challenge. Pat and I used to enjoy walking together with our Collies around our home area and I know he will be with Chris and I in spirit on the 17th June. As several of the group are fans of Ipswich Town FC we have chosen a team name to reflect that passion and those of the team that aren’t necessarily fans will be made honoury Tractor Boys for the day. We appreciate that things are tough financially for everyone at the moment but hope that you might be able to help us out with a donation however small, every little helps as someone once said, and I’m sure that there aren’t many people that haven’t had their lives touched by this dreadful disease in one way or another so please donate what you can to this really worthwhile cause we really do appreciate your help and kindness. Thank you. Dave
