My Story
Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with Cancer and nearly 1 in every 2 people will be diagnosed with some form of Cancer in their lifetime. Cancer doesn't discriminate and I am sure everyone reading this has been affected by this awful disease in some way. What am doing here? So this time last year I had only just learnt to ride a 125 and didn’t pass my test until July! I was put onto this ride by a mate who had this ride on his bucket list. Unfortunately he had to pull out but I stayed in. This year me and about 40 others are taking part in the Longest Day Challenge on the 20th June. We have all purchased motorbikes for under £600 and will be taking these magnificent steeds from Lands End to John o' Groats in under 24 hours (we hope) WITHOUT using any motorways... The route works out to be around 1000 miles which would be a tough drive even in a modern comfortable car, let alone a bike. After the challenge I then have to get back down to HMS Raleigh in Cornwall, so I’m doing pretty much same the distance twice!! So this brings me onto the bike. My trusty steed is a 1999 Honda Deauville 650 . It’s had a very hard 67000 miles and when I collected it I’m sure it was used a ship anchor for the last 5 years! I took the bike for a ‘pre MOT’ and got told the bike was a death trap. Work had to be done to fix this. It has affectionately been named the Phoenix as I have helped the bike rise from the rusty ashes it once sat in. With the help of various people I have stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the whole bike in my own time. The only thing that hasn’t been rebuilt is the engine, so not an important part of the bike 😂 . What can you do? Any amount of money that can be donated to this wonderful cause is so greatly appreciated by me and will absolutely keep me going when I have lost all the feeling of my legs, my hands and my arse! All donations will be going direct to the amazing people at Cancer Research UK. Thank you, Dan
