My Story
Cancer is at the heart of the Crazy Strength story. Our founder Craig Spicer is a 15 year survivor, having been diagnosed at the age of 26 with Hodgkins Lymphoma. His wife Dawn was also diagnosed with Cancer three years prior and son Alfie arrived 12 weeks premature after being conceived through IVF during Craigs treatment, its was a traumatic three years. Craig credits surviving Cancer as one of his main drivers to build the Crazy Strength community, believing that both living with and being able to recover from illness are intrinsically linked to working out. Throughout it's 3 years Crazy Strength has tried to give back, supporting Cancer Research UK with various events. The first one for 2025 is a workout specially designed by Craig describing the worst week in his cancer journey which he labels his Black Week. The Black Week... The hardest part of Cancer is the waiting game...the not knowing. My black week started with me attending a check-in with my doctor to be given the news that it would still be months before treatment. At that point I fainted and was blue lighted to Winchester Hospital with a resting HR of 110 BPM, laid down with no clarity as to the cause nor diagnosis. Poking, prodding, and testing of all sorts ensued for the coming days before being released after six days still with little to no understanding of a way forward. I was so lucky to have the support of my family, parents and mostly my wife...but many others are not as lucky. They have to fight alone lacking the basic support we would all want and hope to give. The suffering in Cancer is not about the Cancer itself but the time having to spend in ones head not knowing. On Saturday 8 February 2025 Crazy Strength will take over Southern Quarters Team WOD session to take part in The Black Week Workout. Part one Individual Suffering - The first half of this workout will represent tackling cancer on your own. This optional part of the workout is not for the faint hearted. In 20 mins individuals will tackle a variety of movements to push you to your limits. Part two Community Support - After a short break the workout will begin again, but this time in teams, representing how tackling Cancer as a community allows the burden to be shared.
