Last year was my first time running in the 5k Pretty Muddy event and I was so inspired by everybody there - and amazed by all the people who turned out to take part. It was such a fantastic atmosphere and so incredibly moving to know that we were all in this together. Cancer is such a devastating disease. Cancer is an indiscriminate thief - it steals the lives of Mothers, Fathers, Husbands, Wives, Daughters, Sons - it doesn't care about who it takes or the impact on those of us left behind. Last year I ran in memory of my partner's mother - Hazel. I wrote on my fund raising page about how awful it was for everyone who knew her to lose her, but this time I want to write about how amazing it was to have ever had the privilege of being known and loved by her. The woman I run in memory of was incredible - she was a fighter her entire life and that steely determination never wavered after her diagnosis. Cancer was not the only illness she was suffering from but nobody who met her would have ever known. Throughout it all, she displayed the utmost dignity and she was always far more concerned about how her diagnosis was affecting those around her. She never once let on about how much it was affecting her. This was a woman who had lost her own husband to cancer shortly before her diagnosis. Just another example of how utterly cruel this disease is. If I can manage to get to the end of my life and be half the woman Hazel was, I would be proud. This year, I will again take inspiration from Hazel and will channel some of the spirit and determination she displayed and will run harder, faster and get even muddier! Of course, as like last year, I will be running beside and with the support of my friends.
