Today I am looking forward to April when I will be celebrating my 60th birthday. However 30 years ago it was not such a happy occasion because two days after my 30th birthday, my mum died of breast cancer. She was 59 years old.
I want to do something to celebrate my life and also try to raise money for Cancer Research. In order to do this I have decided to take part in this year's Fradley 10km race. The race takes place on Sunday, 11th March, which also happens to be Mothering Sunday so seems very appropriate.
I hadn't run a step for over 30 years until late last year, and when I started I was almost three stone heavier than the last time I had put on a pair of running shoes. To say it has been a bit of a shock to my system is something of an understatement. I know I am a lot slower than I was in my 20s but all in all I have been enjoying the challenge.
Making such a public announcement of my intention is quite scary for me. It means I would no longer just be letting myself down if I don't complete it, I would be letting down Cancer Research: I will not let myself do that.
Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page and reading my story. I am grateful of any donation you feel able to give. The money I raise will help fund life-saving research and bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
Donating through this page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK.
