My Story

What is cancer? Cancer is many things to different people. I first heard of cancer when I was 9 years old. My mum developed an agressive form of breast cancer at the age of 39 in hospital in Derby, and was cruelly taken away from me, my brother and my Dad, not to mention her own mum and dad and sister and brother. This pain has never gone away. It reminds me every time I've had to go to hospital over the years for an appointment or even to visit family and friends. I hate hospitals... people go in hospital to die. Thats what I remember from when I was 9 years old..... Then my Dad met a lovely lady called Jean who married my dad when I was 13 years old and she bacame my mum for the next 41 years. Sadly, and by another cruel twist of fate she too was taken by cancer at the age of 82 in June last year. Two remarkable ladies in my life who gave so much love and affection. Cures and treatments for cancers has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 30 - 40 years. Could the treatments that is offered today have saved my mum....given her some more time with her family? Maybe, we will never know......... Cancer is happening right now all around us, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 10k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor me now. Donating through this page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am taking part in the Cancer Research 10k race on Sunday 3rd June on Victoria Embankment Nottingham. Any sponsorships will, I am sure you will agree, go to a very worthy cause....helping to fight cancer. Christine Swann
