My Story
This year, I’m taking part in the Race for Life in Edinburgh. There are several reasons, the biggest one being that two family members - and a few of my friends - have been deeply affected by cancer. That’s why I want to do something to help fund life-changing research. Research into HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), for example, which is what causes cervical cancer. It’s great that school children are offered the HPV vaccine now, because I genuinely believe it saves lives. My sister’s story may have been very different, had it been introduced back when we were at school. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2021, and her journey over the last few years has been an emotional rollercoaster for all of us who love her dearly. I'm also doing the Race for Life in memory of my grandfather, who sadly died of prostate cancer when I was a very young child; I really wish I’d had the chance to know him. It’s so vital that people have a greater awareness of - and less shame around - male-specific cancers.
