Shine Night Walk - Half Marathon

Sat 23 Sep 2017

My Story

Shine is Cancer Research UK's marathon night walk, bringing people from all over the UK together to light up London and fund life-saving research. There is a choice of two distances - the Full Marathon and the Half Marathon. Together with my sister Patsy and her husband Tony Browring, we are entering the Half Marathon, which starts at Southwark Park and finishes at Old Billingsgate. My brother-in-law, Tony, was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma over two years ago but it was only this year that he needed to start chemotherapy. There is currently no cure and the chemo Tony had was aggressive and very brutal. It was only with the help of the staff at the Yarty Ward at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital that he got through this treatment and with the love and support of family and friends. Tony is taking part himself but as he has not regained the strength in his legs yet he is using a mobility scooter. I am also walking for several of my other relatives and friends who have suffered cancer – my sister-in-law has gone through Breast Cancer in the last two years, with its drastic treatment and is, thankfully, clear to date; and my husband’s cousin Chris who very sadly lost her battle with it earlier this year. Each year Cancer Research UK’s scientists get closer to beating cancer, and they’ve helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. But we can’t stop there. Only with our continued support can they turn this research into breakthroughs that save millions of lives. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking work, so please sponsor us now. Donating through my Giving Page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK.

CAUSE

Leukaemia

Five-year survival rates for leukaemia have more than tripled in the last 40 years. But despite this progress, around 4,600 people still lose their lives to the disease every year. Almost a third of all cancers diagnosed in children are leukaemia. Your donation can help Cancer Research UK find better treatments and new ways to prevent the disease in adults and children.
