My Story
Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page. The money I raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Hadrians Wall 2019 - 84 miles, 3 days, 2 mad Yorkshiremen, and countless socks... On the 2nd weekend of July, Bob and myself will, with the support of Ken and his big van, take on the challenge of walking from the West coast of the UK to the East coast, along the path of Hadrians Wall. This is an 84 mile long path, and we intend to do it in just 3 days! Walkers - Bob Hooks, Martin Barfield Logistics - Ken Burt Each year, myself and Bob take on a long distance walking challenge for charity, alternating each time between our preferred charity. Over the years we've taken on the Yorkshire Three Peaks several times, the Lyke Wake Walk, and the Ebor Way. This year, we wanted to support a charity that we both felt strongly for. Both myself and Bob have sadly lost people close to us through cancer this year. - - The Walk - Im sure you all know of Hadrians Wall! The walk is along either the 'military road' that was built on top of the wall foundations, or alongside the extant sections of the wall itself. Starting at Bowness-on-Solway, the first days section takes us skirting around Carlisle, and is mostly flat for the morning, then up onto the hills for the afternoon, ending at Once Brewed. This is a 42 mile section, just to get us in the mood!. Day 2 sees us tackle the remainder of the climbing before dropping down to lower ground late evening. Our final day sees us pass through Newcastle along the banks of the Tyne, to end at the Roman fort at Wallsend. Because the walk is so far from home, we will be camping close by. Our support and logistics will be provided by Ken Burt, and his big van. However, this support extends only as far as maintaining the camp, getting us to and from the section start and end points, and dropping off water! And perhaps a laundry run for fresh socks...
