My Story
Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. I am 1 of those 2 people. At the age of 27 I was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive breast cancer in 2014. I think deep down we all believe it won’t happen to us and I honestly couldn’t believe I was being told I had breast cancer. I was told I would need 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a mastectomy then I would need radiotherapy. All this information is thrown at you in the space of a few minutes, so many choices to think about but all I could really think about was “Am I going to die?” Surely most people diagnosed with cancer think this straight away. So I asked the question and was told there are so many diffnert treatments and options and that they will do everything they can to help me survive and beat this. Believe me I was petrified of what laid ahead for me but I was also determined and knew I had to be positive and strong. Cutting a long story short I had to have a mastectomy and lymph node clearance within a few weeks of being diagnosed. I was then lucky enough to have egg harvesting for when I decided I wanted a family before starting my chemotherapy. Chemotherapy was so hard, every part of it. From losing your hair, eyelashes and eyebrows. To feeling so ill and fragile, to being in hospital twice neutropenic to having a blood clot from my picc line to feeling like I physically couldn’t go on and finish all of my treatment. But with the love and support of my family, friends and my boyfriend Owen I knew I had to finish this and beat cancer. Once chemotherapy was over I had a little break before 15 radiotherapy sessions. Then I was able to start rebuilding my life and try and get back to being a normal young women in her twenties. Having cancer was the hardest thing I’ve ever endured but I stayed focused and strong. Deep down I knew I would beat it, I knew I would be happy and healthy again and her I am at 31 happily married to Owen with a two year old beautiful miracle baby boy Arthur. Without all of the amazing fundraising and research from charities like cancer research my story could be very different. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor me and my wonderful team and help us carry on kicking cancers butt.
