My Story

Hello 👋🏻 My name is Barney Mathews. I’m going to be running the 10K Folkestone Race For Life. Cancer made its way into my family in 2013. My Granny Vera, was diagnosed with breast cancer. On this occasion, she managed to fight it off. In 2022 my Grandma Patricia, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This time it wasn’t going to get beaten. We sadly lost her on the 14th June 2022. Losing my grandma has been really hard. She was the person I would go to whenever I needed to talk to someone. She has taught me many life skills such as knitting and other crafts, reading and writing (obviously when I was younger) and even to tie my laces. Losing her was like losing a best friend. I’m not only doing this race in memory of my grandma, but in memory of those who are affected by Cancer. I’ve had many family friends sadly pass away due to this. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 10k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
