My Story
For Dad...and for everyone facing cancer I’ve signed up for this walk for one simple reason: to raise as much money as I possibly can for Cancer Research UK. Cancer isn't something distant from our family. Someone close to us is living with and fighting cancer, so I know how suddenly this disease can become very real. But there is another person I’ll be carrying with me on every step — my dad, Ali Ahmed Aslam. Dad didn't die from cancer. We lost him to kidney disease. But helping other people was something he believed in deeply, and supporting people affected by cancer was a cause genuinely close to his heart. Years ago, Dad wrote a Shish Mahal cookbook and donated all of the proceeds to The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice.** He didn't just believe in helping people — when he had an opportunity to do something, he did it. That has stayed with me. Since losing Dad, I've thought a lot about how you carry somebody's values forward. For me, this walk is one small way of doing exactly that. The walk itself isn't the important part. I'm not doing this to prove how far I can walk or how tough I am. The challenge is secondary. Raising the money is the point. I can't cure cancer. I can't take away what families going through it are facing. But I can put one foot in front of the other, ask people to get behind me and hopefully turn those steps into something worthwhile. So I'm asking you to help me. If you knew my dad, please donate in his spirit. If cancer has touched your family, donate for them. And if you've been fortunate enough not to experience it, please donate for somebody who has. £5, £10, £20, £50 — whatever you can genuinely afford. It all moves us forward. And if you can't donate, please share this page. Someone you know may be able to. I'll do the walking. You help me make the steps count. This one's for Dad...and for every family hoping for a future with less cancer.
