2017 Great East Run

Sun 24 Sep 2017

I've seen too many people I love dearly fight this horrible illness. Cancer research offers us hope.

My Story

>>>>> 25.09.17 Hi all...sorry for the announcement delay but below will explain. Many thanks for everyone's support and hugely generous donations, you have over quadrupled my target!!! I believe, with your last few donations/cheques to go onto the account, YOU have all raised nearly £1,200 to support Cancer Research's work fight cancer. Thank you so much...however...sadly I did not make it to the end of the race to be able to give you a winning time! I have had tough last few weeks of training with a trail of injuries but the more donations that came in the more determined I was to go for it. I had a great physio working hard with me and the support from my fab wife, pro-runner Elisa and many other friends helped get me to the race. Sadly after two miles the left hamstring played up again. I managed to get another four miles done, determined to get to the finish at whatever time (for myself and you all) one way or another. But at mile six I hit the tarmac as the right leg's old ligament damage didn't like the having to over compensate for the left leg...and it packed up. I wont lie, I was devastated I could not go on further and to be letting me and you all down...and waste all that training. I tried to go again a few times after resting but the damage was done...gutting. On the positive it was inspiring watching the other runners making huge efforts for many other charities too. However the biggest high was to see my wife, Sarah who was also running, flying by and was so proud to see her achieve a hugely impressive time (01:53:52) as well as several other friends all achieving excellent times too. So clearly I am unable to announce our log cabin holiday winner, sorry. The reason for the delay in sending this out was I had to get to see my physio today and chat about an idea. Those that know me well are aware I am a fairly determined chap and not being able to finish has been tough to accept after all the hard work (I am not a runner!) but also compounded with everyone's generous donations. So.... I would really like to have another go at a half marathon distance run and roll the times submitted for that run for the log cabin prize. I am afraid you need to be patient as it is going to take a few weeks before I can start training again (oh no...I just realised that is going to be in winter months) but to make it worth the wait I will include a nice bottle of chilled champagne and other goodies in the cabin for when you win. To be fair we won't be taking anymore guesses...the book is closed. I have also attached the guesses for everyone's interest...you will see a good range! So please bare with me...the donations and your support WILL keep me going in the recovery period (luckily the physio says building our pool with a counter-current machine in the Sheepyard Barn will be very useful in my recovery) and in the winter months out training. We are going to monitor progress and as soon as we get a date we think I can achieve I will share it, probably late Nov/early Dec and I will either join a race but if not possible I will run the Ipswich course or one similar. Thank you again for ALL your amazing donations, your understanding and your patience in waiting to find out if you win a relaxing escape. I have just returned from the physio for a bit of treatment and a couple of needles in the backside (acupuncture that is).. all in the name of fundraising! He reports all is looking in good...and my pace is improving. Last 2.5weeks to go so really down to technique rather than fitness at this stage. I have booked in with Elisa Bostock (excellent coach) for some running coaching to fine tune my rather rough running style...anything to help. I have had some good guess at my running times ranging from 1hr 40 to 2hr22mins! See below about making a donation and winning a free holiday by guessing my finish time. Min. donation of £5 but feel free to donate more for this excellent cause. Please also email your guess to andrew@suffolkescape.co.uk so I have your contact to be able to message you if you win! Many thanks Andrew! >>> 21/07/2017 "Just received my pack, this is happening! I am doing the half marathon for Cancer Research for all those close to me affected by this disease. To raise as much as I can I am offering a four night break in one of our Suffolk Escape luxury log cabins, 16-20 October for two people. All you need to do is guess closest to my official finish time whilst making a donation to Cancer Research. In your donation message add your time in Hours:Mins:Secs and a min. £5.00 donation please. To help you I did my first and only half marathon 2 years ago and my finish time after a lot of training was 01:53:49. I have not really done anything since that and have only just started my first couple of runs 2 months out! There are going be pretty good odds at winning for just £5 and hopefully we can raise even more for Cancer Research UK. Please also email your guess to andrew@suffolkescape.co.uk so I have your contact to be able to message you if you win! (If the winning time is exactly between two guesses the prize will be given to the guess with the lower time of the two. Closing date 22/09/17 and winner will be announced by 19/09/17.) Many thanks Andrew <<<
