Amy's Race for Life

Let’s start with this ... I am not one for physical activity, I was always the one with an injury in P.E. However, the race for life is not a typical run. It is something that will help so many people in the long term and create short term pain for me! Cancer is happening right now, destroying lives that need to be lived. I have decided to run the race for life not only because 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime but also because my brother was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, increasing his chances of developing this life changing disease. Research suggests that you are more likely to get bowel cancer if you have Crohn's disease. The risk starts off low but will increase the longer you have the condition. It’s said that after 10 years the risk is about 1 in 50, after 20 years the risk is about 1 in 10 and after 30 years the risk is about 1 in 5. Crohn’s is a lifelong disease so it is a really frightening possibility that he will develop cancer and I want to be able to create donations to fund research in case he needs treatment in the future. I also hope that doing this will help my mental wellbeing and encourage me to do more races in the future to give back to people who do so much. This year, my mum had a cancer scare of her own. The doctors spotted something abnormal on her mammogram, it was biopsied straight away. She was lucky this time, it wasn’t cancer. We are thankful and grateful that the doctors took it seriously and made sure it was checked out. My grandmother has also had lumps removed just in case they were to turn nasty. The work that cancer research UK do on a daily basis and all the people who donate their time to help deserve the utmost respect. Let’s beat cancer sooner.
