My Story
Hi I’m Amy. I’m taking part in race for life in memory of my Dad. Growing up I never thought I would be an individual to lose a close loved one to cancer but these days it is more than common. In January 2012 Dad had reocccuring episodes of being short of breath. After a few visits to the doctors we were told it was nothing more than some fluid on his lung. A coupe of weeks passed by and Dad was taken into hospital to have the fluid drained, it was successful but the fluid would continue to return. In January 2012 Dad was diagnosed with mesophilioma (asbestosis) which is a lung cancer caused by asbestos. Dad had undergone a couple of chemotherapy treatments but it only made him feel more unwell. He gradually became bed ridden, as he couldn’t even go on the short walks he was advised to have, due to being too weak. He then began to lose lots of weight as the next few months passed. Later that year in August 2012, Dad sadly passed away. Myself and my mum’s world was turned completely upside down. 6 years on and I now feel it is time to give something back. This horrible illness affects so many people around us and we must do all we can to find a cure for it once and for all. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
