My Story

This time last year, I was writing this donation page for my Gan Gan who we lost to cancer in 2020. I miss him very much. He was the kindest, funniest man; would always support me through anything and I know he would have been cheering me on with a ‘Well done Ala’ and a big hug. In between signing up and actually running the 5k race for life, my Nana was also diagnosed and we lost her shortly after I completed it. She wasn’t well enough to come to the finish line, but I was able to FaceTime her and visit her straight after. I joked with her that I’d do the 10k next year and so now I actually have to! But a little piece of my heart is missing now that she isn’t around to hear about it anymore. It’s going to be a very emotional one for me, because she’s in the forefront of my mind now even more than ever. We became extremely close over the past few years and I miss her every single day. Shortly after we lost my Nana, my Uncle was also diagnosed and passed away a few months later, a lot sooner than any of us would have ever imagined. He was effortlessly cool, funny without trying too hard, and had a wicked sense of humour that could make everyone laugh. It’s been a rough few years of loss, and the majority has been down to cancer. My Nana, Gan Gan and Uncle Grant were all such wonderful, kind, fun loving people and I feel very grateful to have had them in my life. Some of my favourite memories over the years have been our family gatherings and I’m hoping to do them proud and raise as much as I can for cancer research so we can keep trying to beat this horrible illness! ___________________ Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 10k to raise money and save lives 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
