My Story

My employer Arqiva is supporting Cancer Research UK so that together we'll beat cancer. Most of my colleagues are working at home at present. We were challenged to do a 5km run, walk, cycle, etc. Arqiva will give £25 to Cancer Research UK for every employee who participates. I don't like running. I fairly regularly do 5km walks, so that wasn't a challenge worth of sponsorship. As my hobby / passion outside work is real ale and pubs, I'm therefore going to be cycling round all 136 pubs in Southampton (bounded by the M27, River Test and River Itchen). Sadly, none of the pubs are allowed to welcome customers in at the moment (other than for take-away), which is probably for the best as I won't get distracted! I'm also going to cycle past St Mary's Stadium were I should have been volunteering and running Southampton Beer Festival 2020 (would have been open to customers on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June). I'll also be going past Bitter Virtue, an amazing local off licence. I've been mapping it out to find a route and I think that it is going to be 50-60km. I've worked out routes so that I can do it in two parts, after spending the days working and supporting my children through their home learning. A map of all the pubs my cycle tour will visit can be found at https://www.shantscamra.org.uk/beer/pubdata/maps.php?search=alexraceforlifehome * = This is pubs under CAMRA's definition, where the venue welcomes anyone (under normal circumstances!) to walk in and have a drink... so actually includes hotel bars. Data based on Southern Hampshire CAMRA's live pub database on 15/06/2020. E&OE. Charities are really missing out with their fundraising at the moment, due to COVID-19, so please give generously if you can! Stretch goal: If I raise over £500, I'll go and cycle to all the Southampton pubs the to the East of the River Itchen too!
