My Story
This September, before the end of the month, I will complete 300 miles on my bike for Cancer Research UK. As some of you may know I used to be an avid triathlete. 10 years ago a challenge such as this would have been a walk in the park. A normal week at that time consisted of cycling up to 100 miles, running around 20 miles and swimming a little over a mile. However, on the 23rd March 2009 that all changed after I prolapsed two discs in my lumbar spine. Within the year I was experiencing issues with the neck and shoulders. I have since been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). TOS is a condition in which there is compression of the nerves, arteries, or veins in the passageway from the lower neck to the armpit. TOS affects mainly the upper limbs, with signs and symptoms manifesting in the shoulders, neck, arms and hands. Pain can be present on an intermittent or permanent basis. It can be sharp/stabbing, burning, or aching. From this moment on I have been dealing with both chronic back and neck pain. This being said, Cancer Research UK has always been close to my heart. I will be pedalling harder than ever because I want to raise money for life-saving research and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Donating through this page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK.
