My Story
In the summer of 2015 my aunt, Vanessa was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the age of 36. She was told she would have to undergo an intense course of chemotherapy. After only 1 course of the chemotherapy, Vanessa had gone into remission. However she had to undergo a further 3 courses of chemotherapy, which meant she was in hospital for 5 months. In July 2016 after a 2 week holiday in Canada visiting the family's close friends, Vanessa discovered the Leukaemia had returned. Unfortunately, this time the battle proved too much and Vanessa lost her fight for life on 14th September 2016 at the age of 37, leaving a husband, Iain and 2 children, Joel & Nicole. Vanessa was full of life and was a keen runner, in fact she had completed the Reading Half Marathon only 3 months before she was first diagnosed in 2015, and was training to complete the Abingdon Marathon in October 2016. Nicole and myself have decided to compete in this years Pretty Muddy Race for Life in memory of Vanessa and are hoping to raise as much as we can for Leukaemia CARE. We think this is something that Vanessa would have enjoyed competing in herself and would certainly have got herself and others as muddy as she possibly could. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life Pretty Muddy to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
