My Story
In Aug 2020 a fabulous lady joined my residential care team. Kirsty worked at nights and she worked hard to make sure the young people in our home were cared for and kept safe. This was not always easy but Kirsty never gave up! In Aug 2021 after a period of feeling a little unwell (but still coming to work!), we received the news Kirsty had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. Resilient as always Kirsty apologised that she would need to be off, but would be back soon. By Sept 2021 Kirsty was in Hospital, she would call and give me updates and remind me, she would be back soon, always asking how the children were and if they were all ok. In Oct 2021 Kirsty sadly died, she was only 40 years old. Kirsty was a fabulous, positive soul within our team and her passing was a huge loss. I will never forget seeing her for the last time as she left work, I would often arrive to her still being there even though she could have gone home hours before :) The exact moment of hearing her diagnosis, the last phone call we had together, the call to say she had passed, the heartbreak in communicating this news not only to her colleagues but the children she so deeply cared for within our children's home. It is a sad reality that cancer touches the lives of us all, which is why fundraising for cancer research uk never ceases to be important. So as much as I really hate exercise, and would prefer to walk less miles, not more, I walk this month, to remember Kirsty. <3
