My Story

While we can’t all get together for our usual Manchester to Blackpool 62-mile charity bike ride, we have taken the concept of the 100km fundraiser and turned it into the MBVUK 100 Challenge! Our colleagues, Dealers, customers and suppliers will be doing 100 of something in July. This could still be a 100km bike ride, or it could be running 100km in total in the month, or 100 laps of the garden or local park, or 100 rounds of golf, or 100 press ups or sit ups, or squats, or 100 hours of silence! It could be baking and selling 100 cakes, selling 100 plants, 100 hours of yoga etc – anything that is a challenge. While we know that the pandemic has had a huge impact on businesses, the same is also true for charities, including Cancer Research UK. Just few weeks ago, CRUK announced a drop of 20-25% in their fundraising income over the coming financial year and because of this decline in income, they had to make the difficult decision to cut their research spend, which works out at approximately a £44 million cut to research funding. To put this into context, CRUK funds around 50% of all cancer research in the UK. The sad truth is that we all know someone impacted by cancer – partner, friend, family member, colleague – there are more than 200 different types of cancer and 1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetime. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has placed a huge strain on cancer services in the UK. It’s been felt in all areas of cancer care – from screening and diagnosis through to cancer treatment, and new figures have revealed the sheer scale of this disruption – estimating that over 2 million people in the UK are waiting for screening, tests and treatments since lockdown began.
