My Story

Hello, my name is Jake and I am 11 years old. For a second time, I am going to try and raise money for a cause very close to my heart, cancer research on 28/04/2019 I will be raising money in memory of my Dad, who sadly lost his fight against cancer in October 2011, at 27 years old. My Dad (Matt) at 18 years old was diagnosed with a brain tumour. In December 2007 he found out, it had grown with a blood supply. In January 2008 he had major brain surgery, to have the bulk of it removed. The following month, he was told it was grade 4 and that he had 2-3 years to live. He battled through 6 weeks of radiotherapy in April-June 2008. Later in November 2008, he was told another tumour had appeared and he restarted chemotherapy for 10 months. Regular scans showed it stayed away for 15 months; more chemotherapy continued. Sadly on 26th October 2011 at 27 years young, my Dad lost his fight to cancer and passed away. I am also fighting for my Grandad, Ian, (my mums dad) who is still battling prostate cancer today. In September 2007, we found out he had prostate cancer, this was treated with radiotherapy, hormone tablets and injections until 2016. In 2016 he found out it had spread to his bladder. He had to have a big operation to remove his prostate, bladder, semen sack and 22 lymph nodes. He now has a stoma bag. We were then told he had a 1% chance of it coming back, which was such a relief. Then, in early 2018, he was told devastatingly that the 1% applied to him. It had returned and spread to 1 lymph node between his spine, liver and kidney. In June 2018 he had more radiotherapy; in November he was told it’s spread to his pelvis. He has regular blood tests for his psa levels and in 2 months, they have doubled from 4.6 to 9.4. In February this year it was confirmed it is within 3 lymph nodes this time round it is not treatable with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is not currently an option. They will be treating with hormone therapy, this is to help control/slow down the growth, the next steps depend on how the cancer reacts to this treatment. Edit: my grandad is going to start having chemotherapy very soon, for 18 weeks, in the hope to give him more time To raise money for cancer research, I am going to complete a mini triathlon. My plan is to run from my house to school, ride from school to Waterlooville swimming pool. I will try and beat my last swim of swimming 36 lengths. I pushed myself and was able to raise money for this cause that impacts to many people’s lives. Thank you for reading my story and for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. If you can help me raise money this cause, hopefully we can help those keep fighting against cancer. Thank you kindly, every penny is cherished, Jake Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I’m fundraising right now for Cancer Research UK.
